Community Artist Special Collaborative Spotlight Featuring: Marksquare_
Our community has many talented and skilled Guardians in it, some of those Guardians are artists. This week is a very special Spotlight, its shared by two incredible Artists in our community that have come together to collaborate on some incredible pieces known as The Timeless Tower Series. Both have been playing Destiny since the very beginning , CortanaV playing since the Alpha was released and Marksquare since the Beta. Destiny is widely known for its incredible attention to detail with its breathtaking landscapes and scenery as well as the beauty of the characters in it. Marksquare has been creating art for around eighteen years now, asking Mark what his choice of medium is for creating art and what inspired him to create The Timeless Tower Series he replied saying " It varies from time to time but I always enjoy painting with oils and I have been making large scale recycled art from cardboard for a while too. That has to be a close second. I have a ?ne arts background and I really enjoy old (pre the invention of the camera) art and the time traveling and lack of memory about a Guardian’s past in Destiny made me think... Well, what if???" Marksquare is known in the community for creating incredible art pieces as well Destiny fan art giving each his unique twist showing his creativity as an artist. Also being one of kindest Guardians as well having a great sense of humor he enjoys interacting each day with others in the community as he is always willing to help others with anything that he can. Asking Mark how him and CortanaV first met and came about creating something special to share with everyone in the community he replied " We met through Twitter and became fast friends due to a lot of shared interest in art and fashion and really the collaboration just grew out of that friendship. I would occasionally ask Cortana’s opinion about a piece as I was creating it and she always helped a great deal so when I started a new series I knew she would be a really fun person to collaborate with. We really do have a great time planning out the pieces in The Timeless Tower Series and I think it shows in the work".
Each of the pieces these two amazing Guardians created are incredibly done, matching perfectly to the character from Destiny. Each not only are done from famous paintings throughout history but also comes with a harmonizing story with each of the paintings, coordinating perfectly with each other. Asking Marksquare how they selected each piece to match so perfectly he replied " That’s where CortanaV really comes in. She has a good eye and a large amount of knowledge about old art. Her family actually collects and preserves art of several mediums. So we talk a lot about what painting would make a good candidate for each new Timeless Tower piece and then who within the Destiny Universe would be the right ?t within that painting." With what began as a friendship that grew out of so many shared interests to creating such beautiful timeless pieces together, enjoying the conversations and the process of creating each piece that shows what beauty can come from friendships as well as inspire others to do the same. I asked if it was difficult placing each character into the paintings as if they were of the characters originally, Marksquare replied " This is something that I really enjoy doing. I consider myself a meme-ist as much as I consider myself an artist. I like to make art that is in effect a meme that requires no text to understand so I get a lot of practice painting things into places where they shouldn’t be". Marksquares' pieces have been seen all over the community and has been featured on Bungie.net for his pieces being exceptionally well done as well as for there creativity. With creating these pieces the whole process of collaborating with each other from beginning to end made the experience a delight for both that can be seen with the detail in each piece from the subject to the background, adding little touches of the Destiny universe in each. Asking them which piece took the longest to create, Marksquare replied with saying " The time it takes varies greatly, both due to the conversation leading up to putting brush to canvas and the actual creation of the piece. One that stands out in my mind is The Abduction of Mara Sov. We both really liked the direction the piece went early on but we had extensive talks about what the background should be. We ?nally decided to put the shard of the Traveler behind her to bring the most recent Mara Sov sighting into the Destiny 2 era".
Our community is truly fortunate to have such creative and talented Guardians in it. Growing a friendship, with the excitement and joy these two artists had while creating such beautiful timeless pieces. Its just as beautiful seeing the fun they had with capturing each character in beautiful historic pieces. Each painting being famous works of art already and adding characters from the Destiny universe that match perfectly with there own story that collaborates perfects with each other is truly a work of art. Lastly asking was it always a thought to do more than one piece to The Timeless Tower Series and can we all look forward to seeing more incredible collaborations from Marksquare and CortanaV ? Mark replied saying " Yes for sure! I always think in terms of doing a series of pieces. It gives the viewer more of a narrative and helps them to see into my head a bit. The Timeless Tower Series will continue on with new versions of the Destiny characters we all know and love but absolutely CortanaV and I make a great team!".
