For months since Bungie announced they would be splitting from publishing company Activision, it's felt like the sequel title of Destiny 2 has been in limbo. There was certainly content on the horizon, but beyond what players had already paid for in terms of the season pass, there was on The Darkness™.

Now, community lead David “DeeJ” Dague has reached out to Guardians wondering what's next for the future of the franchise and promised Destiny is marching its way towards a "new era," both for the game developing company Bungie, and the game series as a whole.

That doesn't give us much, of course, but it's something. There were rumblings that Bungie was going to leave Destiny 2 floating in the water as they hurried to get out their own version of the game for next-generation consoles and powerful PC set-ups. The rumours of Destiny 3 aren't really wrong, per se, but Deej's promises that both the franchise and the title that we currently on our hands is hurrying towards a new era is certainly promising for those loyal to the sci-fi looter-shooter that we've been playing for half a decade.

It's also great to hear that Bungie have a battle plan. With direct competitors like Bioware's Anthem, and the Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's The Division 2 marching on to the market - some to wide praise, others in a limp and under-prepared state - Bungie has been shown they need to get a wriggle on if they want to stay at the top of the pile in their genre. That said, fans of the titles are eager to see what's next regardless, and players jumping ship from the ever-burning Anthem release, or even the slow-release content of The Division may join Destiny's ranks if they can see that there's a clear plan for the future from the developers.

"We'll be looking deeper into the future, and sharing with you more about a new era for Bungie and Destiny 2," DeeJ said after detailing more information about the upcoming Season of Opulence release.

Whether or not it's much, which it isn't of course, it's just plain exciting. Sitting in the dark on content for nearly all of 2019 has been damaging for Destiny players, many of whom just want a scrap of something revealed about what's next for their favourite time-sink.

For now, we wait. A "new era" is apparently barrelling towards us behind the scenes, likely either the sequel to Destiny 2 that everyone has been expecting, or some other brand-spanking new release within the same title world that Bungie has been developing.
