Bungie will be taking Destiny servers offline on Thursday to prepare for the upcoming cross-save function to be added to the game, and it's going to be a hefty wait.

The servers, both for Destiny 1 and Destiny 2, which operate on the same back-end configuration, will be disabled from 7am Thursday and will come back online 12 hours later.

As well as the main game titles, Destiny Companion and Bungie.net will also be unavailable through the web, mobile, and third-party apps. This includes the B.net forums.

"There's a bit to do on the back end to prep for fall and cross-save. We'll have a few more maintenance windows. No current details on length or dates," Bungie community manager Dylan "dmg04" Gafner said of the planned outages.

Now we know what you're thinking - good lord that's a long time to not be able to load into Destiny and smash out some powerful rewards or keep working on quests. Yep, it is, but it'll be worth it - cross-save will take Destiny to a whole new level.

Earlier this month Bungie revealed their massively popular science-fiction FPS series Destiny would be implementing cross-save capabilities between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, as well as the soon to be released Google Stadia in-browser game console.

It's incredible news for Guardians that are separated from their friends and online buddies by the platform barrier that arose from the console wars of yesteryear. As more and more titles move towards crossplay capabilities, like Epic Games' battle arena title Fortnite, and Psyonix's sports-car title Rocket League, it's clear that's what gamers want - the freedom to play whomever they desire, whenever they want, and maybe even wherever they want.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is set for release on Tuesday, September 17.
