Since the original Destiny, the main antagonist of the series has always been hinted at being the Darkness, the equal and opposite to the Light that the Guardians use to power their abilities.
For most of Destiny 2’s lifespan, it was known that the Darkness and its most powerful minions, rumored to be known as The Veil, had found the location of the Traveler and were speeding across the galaxy to put an end to the war that had been raging since before the beginning of time.
What was not known is how close the Darkness actually was and unfortunately for humanity, it seems they are closer than we thought.
Like the Light, the Darkness is said to be a para-casual force that has no physical form, only an immense power that can be felt throughout the material realm.
Many of the current enemies of humanity such as the Hive and the Vex worship this force as a type of god that will bring about the end of complexity and diversity where only the strong survive.
It has long been speculated that the Pyramid ships that have been seen in concept art, cinematics and in-game are not actually the Darkness itself but rather their direct disciples in the same way that Guardians serve the Light. This race was first spotted in an early concept art for the original Destiny:
These Pyramid ships were then next spotted during an after-credits cutscene for the Red War campaign where they were shown reacting to the Light being thrown out from the Traveler by it defeating Gaul.
This was the moment that these ships pinpointed the location of the Traveler and had begun their journey towards our solar system.
After this cutscene, not much information was given about the exact locations of these Pyramid ships.
One such ship was found underneath the surface of the Moon during the Shadowkeep campaign, with our Guardian even communicating directly to the Darkness, but this ship was dormant and held no further information on the location of the main force.
This all then leads up to the start of the Season of the Worthy where players are tasked with bringing the Warmind’s weapons and system scanners online to try to stop the Almighty which is hurtling towards Earth.
This had a secondary effect of unintentionally spotting the approaching Pyramid ships and they are close, really close.
The below image was taken during the opening of the Seraph Bunker on Io where Zavala and the player are viewing a map of the system:
These ships have already reached the orbits of some of the outer planets of the solar system and will soon reach occupied areas.
The Seraph Bunker on Io also contains a large 2D display of the solar system. During week 1 of the bunker being open, these Pyramid ships were shown at the very edge of the display but a terrifying update has occurred since the last weekly reset. These minions of the Darkness are fast approaching Titan.
The first week of the Io bunker only displayed a single column of Pyramids ships at the very edge of the display but since then there are now 3 columns of ships. If we take the measurement of 2 columns per week then these ships should reach Titan by either the start of the next Season of sometime soon after.
Could Titan be the first battleground between the forces of Light and Dark?
Bungie Design Lead Robbie Stevens did state the following in their ‘The Moon and Beyond Vidoc’ prior to the release of Shadowkeep:
“Season 8 (Undying) is the catalyst, Season 9 (Dawn) is where things really start to build and Season 10 (Worthy) is where things start to get pretty intense and then Season 11 everything is going to come together and you're going to want to be there to see it happen.”
So all this seems to point towards Season 11 possibly containing the first direct conflict between humanity and the Darkness since the Collapse.
This is all very exciting as The Darkness and these Pyramid ships have been teased for many years now but one question still remains: How are we supposed to fight this force when it easily obliterated most of humanity at its peak during the Collapse?
Guardians exist this time around but they are few in number. Hopefully the next Season will bring some answers because as it stands, we might not stand a chance.
