How to boost your Destiny 2 character to Power 900 in minutes in Shadowkeep

With the release of Shadowkeep and Season of the Undying earlier this month, all player gear was instantly boosted to the new starting level of 750 so that both new and returning players could jump straight into the action with their friends.

This boost was met with a small amount of backlash from the community from those who felt cheated that they had spent such a large amount of time grinding to the level cap to then have brand new players starting at the same level as them. This backlash shortly died down and the change was accepted amongst players as simply being a way to draw in more players to the community. After all, Destiny is a game that thrives on a large player base so, as the saying goes, “the more the merrier”.

Recently, Bungie introduced a new kind of level boost into Destiny 2 that this time has been met with confusion from the community instead of frustration like last time. For 2,000 Silver, which equates to $20USD, players are able to boost their characters to the ‘soft cap’ of 900 from the character select screen.

What ‘soft cap’ means in Destiny 2 is that this is the maximum light level you are able to reach from basic tier drops such as blue (rare) gear. From this level of 900, the player will need to complete certain higher difficulty activities in order to acquire “Powerful Gear” that will be used to obtain a higher level past the 900 soft cap.

The reason for the amount of confusion from the player base regarding this boost is that it just all seems very unnecessary. The boost only allows the player to reach the soft cap meaning that by simply doing almost anything in the game from level 750 they would reach 900 within a few short hours at most.

A head-scratching caveat to this boost is that it can only be applied to secondary characters. Those players that are making secondary characters to redo the content on are usually invested enough in the game that they would simply rather play the game than fork over $20 to not play. There are also well-known strategies to power level secondary characters that really drives home the irrelevance of this boost to a lot of people.

One such technique is to transfer all your high power weapons from your main character onto a secondary character then repurchase old levelling gear in the collections tab for a quick and easy power boost. This technique can get new secondary characters up to the 900 power level soft cap in as little as 15 minutes.

A trade of $20 for 15 minutes of your time seems like a poor deal for most people but it can be assumed that this boost is really only aimed at a small percentage of the player base that is both time-poor and has some disposable income. The reason that many game companies still do this purchasable character boost is that they require a relatively small amount of developer time to implement and can still generate a large amount of profit if even only a minor slice of the player base decides to purchase it.
