Destiny players attempt to end the curse on the Dreaming City

The Destiny 2 location ‘The Dreaming City’ was first introduced into the game with the release of the Forsaken DLC in September 2018. The Dreaming City was structured as an end-game location where high-level players could travel to at the end of the Forsaken story missions to further enhance their Light Level.

Almost a week after the release of Forsaken, The Dreaming City became home to a new Raid known as The Last Wish. When this Raid was completed some 18 hours later by the clan Redeem, a wish was bestowed upon The Dreaming City by the Raid’s final boss, Riven of a Thousand Voices.

This wish allowed Oryx’s sister, Savathun and the Taken Vex Mind Quria to enter The Dreaming City and lock it in a 3-week time loop. The Dreaming City would change week-by-week as the curse grew stronger with it culminated in the Dungeon, ‘The Shattered Throne’ where players would defeat Savathun’s daughter ‘Dul Incaru’. This defeat of ‘Dul Incaru’ is what would trigger the loop reset

Within the ‘Truth to Power’ lore book there is a paragraph of great significance that many players of the Destiny community were excited to put to the test. The paragraph reads:

“You bring Medusa before Rahool. "Ah," he sniffs, "another battle trophy? Pre-Collapse, post-Foreboding, a covert intelligence designed to watch over a high-risk colony mission. Allow me to decrypt her for you." He issues you several tokens, a rare-quality fusion rifle, a shader, and a letter. The letter reads "Achieve Light Level 999 and defeat Dûl Incaru in a one-person fireteam to unlock the true ending of the Dreaming City.”

Many players suspected that this lore entry was written by Savathun herself and could potentially all be a part of some scheme of hers. Even though this was likely the case, players were still keen on soldiering ahead.

Even though players were looking forward to seeing if there was any truth to this last sentence within the lore paragraph, many soon realised that the amount of XP required to achieve level 999 was astounding.

This, however, did not stop two Guardians by the names of ‘ZupahDupah’ and ‘Bagel4K’ from attempting the enormous grind that was in front of them. For the longest time Zupah was the clear frontrunner in Light Level but a few unlucky Pinnacle drops meant that Bagel was able to take the lead by staying awake almost 30 hours straight to become the first player to reach 999 Light.

It was at this point that a spanner was thrown in the works. Even though Bagel had played Destiny for a ridiculous amount of time within the last two weeks, he was still very inexperienced when it came to completing The Shattered Throne, let alone attempting it solo. Bagel then reached out to renowned Destiny streamer ‘Gladd’, who was a part of the fireteam that was first to complete The Last Wish raid, to take control of his account and stream himself completing the Dungeon.

This idea was met with some backlash as the community thought that Bagel should be the one to complete the Dungeon as he had put in the hours to reach 999 Light. Instead, a compromise was made with Bagel taking the reins while both Zupah and Gladd coached him via voice coms on how to progress through the mission while almost 25,000 people watched on.

Bagel was able to complete the activity in almost record time considering his inexperience, and potential nervousness at being watched by so many people, but as many people were fearing nothing happened once Dul Incaru was slain. The mission ended as it normally does with Gladd saying “Hey chat it’s worth a shot, alright listen it’s worth a shot. If nothing happens lets not…it’s worth a shot. We tried.”

Even though the quest to break The Dreaming City curse ended up not delivering a true ending, it did give the Destiny community an unforgettable moment. Previously unknown players Zupah and Bagel were given the chance to work with streamer legend Gladd as they all gave the Destiny community a quality piece of entertainment.

A day after Bagel, Zupah and Gladd completed The Shattered Throne at 999 Light, a news article was uploaded on Bungie.net that congratulated their efforts. Within the paragraphs were several lines in parentheses that combined into the following message:

“I am Savathûn, ravenous!
I have set the snare and baited the trap
Is victory so easy, hero?
I am the finality, the reward—I am the true ending
This is another gift
Your strength is my strength
Your victory is my victory
My jaws are wide and I am waiting
The wait is long, but I am ceaseless
I am Savathûn, fulfilled, delighted, expectant.”

Could there still be more to the story of The Dreaming City or is this post very tongue-in-cheek with Bungie just having a little bit of fun with the community? Stay tuned to find out more when, or rather if, the story is ever expanded upon.
