Our community has many talented and skilled Guardians in it, some of those Guardians are artists. Each week we at DTR (Destiny Tracker) will showcase some works of art created by one of our very talented artists in the Destiny community and get to know alittle about them. This week, our spotlight goes out to a Guardian that has been playing Destiny since December of 2014 with The Dark Below expansion " I don’t really have a main. I play and enjoy all of the characters. The character I use the most varies depending on the DLC, or more accurately, on the raid. Which character works better for me on each of the raids. For example right now is my Titan because is the one I have the most fun with in Leviathan. And during taken king it was my Hunter". Umcomics like so many began discovering his own creativity when he was a child, " I started when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I would watch animated movies or tv shows and feel like I wanted to draw like that, so I would record the shows on ye old VCR and then pause the video and draw a character in a pose that I liked. It wasn’t until I discovered comic books (Uncanny X-Men 290), I was about 16, that I really fell in love with developing art and the desire to create my own characters and stories". Unmistakably a talented artist in the community, his pieces can be seen throughout the community as they are admired by many for his unique style and impressive line work in each piece. With a passion for Destiny and its own incredible visuals and details, I asked umcomics what inspired him to create Destiny fan art " The game itself is what inspired me the most. Since I first fired up the game, the art in it just grabbed me. The design on the alien races, the environments, all of it is just amazing, so it inspires fan art I think". No question, Destiny has some of the most beautiful landscapes and characters in any video game out today and is just one of the many things that sets Destiny apart from the rest. When umcomics is creating a piece his preferred medium is in a digital format. Umcomics added " I like watercolors and graphite a lot, but with Digital I can play around with different painting styles until I find the one, that I think, will work best with what I am drawing. Plus Ctrl Z is my safety blanket. Traditional pencil and paper are still my favorite to sketch with though".
One of the many positive aspects of the Destiny community is how supportive many members are for one another. With so many talented Guardians in the community many have gained from others adapting tips, ideas or techniques incorparting them into their own works. I asked umcomics how his engagements and conversations in the community help him grow as an artist, " There have been two main ways it has helped me. One is by seeing what all the talented artists out there are doing. It inspires me, gives me ideas. Watching what style of painting or drawing they use helps me think beyond my usual tropes and try different things that otherwise I probably would not have done. The other is by listening to other players, while running raids or Nightfalls. They talk about what they like or dislike or what they think this or that should be like. Or just by a random joke, it gets me thinking about creating drawings or stories, which then inspires me to sketch, which in turn inspire other ideas, not just about Destiny but other things as well" umcomics replied. The community has a way of inspiring creativity throughout it whether its from trying a new style or with engaging with Guardians in game during a Nightfall or other activity. The community is always ever expanding on what Bungie created in the world of Destiny. The community as a whole I asked umcomics what his favorite part of the community is, he replied saying " The collaboration. In my experience, there seems to be a genuine wish by the community to help each other. Even if it’s just to complete a small quest. This was made even more apparent to me when my son started playing Destiny with me. When he wanted to start running raids, I was worried about, maybe running into an impatient group that would be aggressive with him for making a mistake or asking too many questions, but so far everyone we have run with has been patient and kind and willing to adapt to his needs and that has me very impressed. As well as all the Charity streams, and groups that have formed to help others in real life, not just in game". The Destiny community separates itself from the rest with how its members are always willing to help others in game with the countless groups and clans as well as doing amazing things for charities to make a real life difference in the world. Guardians are more than a character in a game, the Guardians in the Destiny community are truly protectors and do so many incredible things to help others, its an honor to be called Guardian in this community.
We are truly fortunate to have umcomics in our community. His unique styles and visuals in each of his art pieces makes each piece stand out and all are truly incredibly done. With being so talented in the line work he displays in each of his pieces I asked umcomics what medium he would like to try in the future for a piece and what kind of music or stream does he enjoy listening to while working on a piece, "I would like to use Oil paintings for one. That medium fascinates me, but I have never gone really deep into working with it. But someday I may start playing with it more, I think Destiny fan art would be a good way for me to use Oils since it will keep my interest and push me to keep on playing with it. In terms of music, I either listen to Slipknot, Pantera, Megadeth, Biohazard, Sepultura and other similar bands. I listen to movie scores, anything John Williams or Hans Zimmer. As for twitch, I watch Leah, Broman, BelleBunny or Guardian Radio, and once in a blue moon when he streams Sam Witwer." umcomics responded. It was an honor to have the opportunity having umcomics as this week's community artist spotlight, he has brightened the days of so many in the community with his art pieces and with engaging with Guardians all around the community each day. Lastly I wanted to ask umcomics what advice he would give to a community member starting out with an interest in creating art and who in the community he would enjoy creating a collaboration piece with, "Start with whichever part of the game calls out to you the most. For some people is the weapons, others is vehicles, for me, it was the alien races. I drew a lot of Thrall and Vex goblins at first. Another way to start is by drawing elements from reference to familiarize yourself with the object. Like an exotic helmet or gun, and then adapting it to a personalized image, like a guardian drinking coffee with the gun or helmet or both on the table. Another could be to draw the Ahamkara skull Shaxx has, to learn the look, feel and texture of it, and then draw a Warlock studying the skull and making notes ( I need to go sketch this). Start with what you like most from the game and your creativity will guide you to where you should go with it. To be honest ever since I started seeing the creations from everyone in the community, I would like a massive artist collab in which each person adds their own flavor to an ever growing illustration. Now more realistically speaking, yeah everyone, there is something to learn from each collab. umcomics replied. Couldn't agree more with how incredible a massive community artist piece would be and how truly special that would be. You can find more of umcomics art at Instagram.com/umcomics, and Twitter.com/mpinzonart or at his YouTube channel at YouTube.com/mpinzonart. It was truly a fantastic experience getting to know umcomics more and having the great honor of having him as this week's community artist spotlight. We all look forward to everything else in the future and as always thank you for reading.
